IDPwithBEE: On the Rise with Bruce Carter

The Dallas Cowboys will welcome a new defensive scheme in 2013, one that could fit their personnel better.  They welcome Monte Kiffin and his Tampa 2 defense; which is a 4-3 base scheme.  DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer make the switch to DE while Sean Lee, Justin Durant and Bruce Carter handle the LB duties.  With that being said, I take a look at Bruce Carter who stands out of the bunch from this switch.

Kiffin will move Carter to weakside LB because of his size and speed (ran a 4.3 40 prior to his ACL Tear) which would put Carter in position to make plays.  Kiffin has said that Carter reminds him of Derrick Brooks; former Buc who is an 11-time Pro Bowler and an ideal weakside LB in the Tampa 2 Scheme.  The thing with the Brooks comparison, it raises the bar for Carter and I don’t think he minds that at all.  Brooks was always around the ball, with his speed and range I expect Carter to be as well.

Bruce Carter

If it wasn’t for Lee’s injury last year we may have not gotten a sample of what Bruce Carter can do; but it happened and we’ve seen Carter shine in a few games last year before going down with his own injury.  Will Carter raise his game to the next level? Yes he will and switching for the 4-3 benefits him because that’s what he played in college at UNC; it’s where he’s most comfortable at.  He’ll also be looking to build on his 80 tackles and 9 TFL numbers he posted in 2012.  Carter is on the verge of a breakout season and if he and Lee can stay healthy it’ll elevate the entire defense.

Bruce Carter thru the 12 games he played at ILB, he has a rating of 3.5 with a 3.6 rating in rush defense and 0.7 rating in pass defense.  He also had 30 stops and only 3 missed tackles, all this will increase big time in 2013 as he’ll be more comfortable playing weakside LB and in a scheme he’s familiar with.  Carter will have no problem getting at least 100 total tackles and he’ll chime in a bit in the other categories, wouldn’t be surprised if he forced a handful of turnovers.  He’s a strong LB2 candidate now and is currently my #17 ranked LB entering 2013.  You can get Carter quite cheap now; and if you can don’t hesitate to make the move to draft or trade for him.

 Projection: 119 total tackles / 3 QB Sacks / 4 FF / 3 FR / 2 INT / 6 PD’s
